Audio Storytelling

Ira Glass’ host of This American Life, talked about what really makes a story engaging. I feel like he explained that all good stories combine two main points, an anecdote and a moment of reflection. He mentioned how the anecdote is what keeps the listener interested. it makes action or details move forward. The reflection when when the storyteller explains why their story is important and why it matters. If a story has no reflection, it will lack meaning even if sounding interesting.

One thing that stood out to me was how Glass mentioned there is a gap between peoples taste and their skill when they start. In the beginning, you will know what a good story sounds like, but your own work won’t sound like that yet. He says that this “gap” is normal and that it only closes with a lot of practice and editing. I liked this because it applies to anything in the world, like soccer, you won’t be good at things right away but it takes time and patience and learning. I also like it because I sometimes feel like I have to be good at something right away so hearing even writing and storytelling takes practice makes me feel better about writing and learning.

Glass also talks about the importance of editing and not being afraid to cut things that don’t move the story forward. He says you should look for that “bait” — the element that makes people want to keep listening. This helped me understand that good storytelling is not just about having interesting events, but also about how you build curiosity and meaning through pacing and emotion.
